Illegal immigration is one of South Africa’s most polarising issues and the state keeps making it worse.

1) Why it’s happening
A long, porous border + corruption at border posts creates a pipeline that is easy to exploit.

2) Why people come
Some arrive for low-wage work South Africans often avoid, while others come because they see business opportunities locals aren’t taking especially in small towns and rural areas.

3) The “minority middleman” effect
In tight communities, running a shop often turns into running a credit book. Outsiders can enforce rules and margins more easily which is why certain immigrant business models scale fast.

4) What won’t work
Vigilantism and scapegoating people on the ground. It escalates instability and solves nothing long-term.

5) What will work
Apply immigration and labour laws consistently, secure border management, and remove unnecessary red tape that makes it harder for South Africans to start and scale businesses.

This is a policing, governance, and economic problem and it needs an adult solution.
