THE ANC: A PARTY TIRED OF GOVERNING

THE ANC: A PARTY TIRED OF GOVERNING

The famous author, T. S. Eliot coined the phrase: “This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but with a whimper.”

Many of us remember growing up with the dread of the inevitable war that was going to happen when the mighty USSR together with their feared East German partners, would one day come over the hill. Us teenagers even used to use the phrase “strong as Russia”, to prove how powerful we were. And then one day, a bunch of Germans armed with denim jeans, colourful shirts and mullets just starting chiselling away at the dreaded Berlin wall and within 18 months the USSR was no longer. No guns, no nukes. A complete capitulation.

What happened?

It takes energy and enthusiasm to keep things going and sometimes organisations just runs out of both at the same time. This has happened to the ANC.

The ANC leadership are just not equipped with the tools to repair itself. For the past 30 years, the ANC ruthlessly exploited the liberation myth and took total control of every aspect of the state. They not only run the politics, but also run the state owned companies, sports bodies, judiciary, media and for the past year, our personal freedom.

This takes a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm in order to keep this kind of massive, intricate system going. You need to have slick structures, constant renewal and dynamic leadership. The ANC has none of this.

Oddly enough, The ANC last had the necessary energy when Jacob Zuma was in charge, because he was motivated by the need to steal as much money as possible and hide it from everyone. He was motivated and carried this motivation through to everyone who did his bidding. He also had extremely competent enablers like the Gupta and Watson brothers and their very able assistants.

So what has gone wrong with the current ANC government of President Cyril Ramaphosa and what happens now?

President Ramaphosa came into power with the stated aim of keeping the ANC together rather than to put the country first. Admittedly, he never pretended that he wanted to put the country first. He put together the so-called zebra coalition government which in it includes half of the CR17 team who supports the President and half of the Zuma acolytes who detest him. This has left him impotent. He cannot fire any of the Zuma team, because that will restart the civil war; and he can’t fire any his own team lest they look bad. So our useless ministers from both sides are safe in the knowledge that nothing they do will get them fired. We just have to see the Zuma ministers like Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and the CR ministers like Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams to see what I mean. We shouldn’t be surprised that an idiot like Lindiwe Zulu feels empowered to fire water cannons on the aged and inferm to understand what happens if you know you are never going to lose your job.

So what happens next?

The ANC has lost support at every election since 2004, and this will continue. It will culminate in the party dropping below 50% at the next elections and then the fall will accelerate faster than you can say National Party.

Kind Regards
Michael Sham
